Namsan Kindergarten in Sadong District, Pyongyang, is a small kindergarten which was not well known to people.
But it has earned reputation since its headmaster Jong Hyon Hwa and other teachers started to train kindergarteners into good calligraphers.
Ri Sol Gyong, 5, from this kindergarten took first place in the calligraphy category at the 14th national contest of kindergarteners with amazing talents held not long ago.
The experts were struck with wonder to see Sol Gyong writing calmly with a brush thicker than her wrist in her small hand, while adjusting her breath.
The letters “Love for Future” written by her were accurate in proportion and shape, uniform in thickness and formative, stimulating the deep interest of participants.
She had been good at paduk (go) and handwriting since the age of 3. The day when the child started at the kindergarten, Kim Chung Sim, teacher at the kindergarten, discovered a calligraphic talent in her, while seeing her gazing closely at the fairy pictures and the phrases pasted on the walls of the corridor.
Since then, Kim grounded her with the help of experts in calligraphy one after another—how to hold a brush, dip the brush in ink and write strokes.
Shortly after she started to learn, she proved to be a little prodigy. It seemed she had inherited her talent from her grandmother and mother who were also good calligraphers. Soon she mastered various styles of calligraphy.
On the day when her daughter was successful in the contest, her mother Sin Kum Hui said with great delight: It is like a dream. My husband and I didn’t pay attention to my daughter’s talent. It is thanks to our excellent socialist education system that my daughter and other children can bring their talents into full bloom.
Sol Gyong and other little talents are growing happily, bringing their talents into full bloom at the kindergarten.
