Pae Ji Song, PhD and section chief of the Physics Faculty of Kim Il Sung University, is one of the recognized young scientists in the DPRK.

When he was young, his parents wanted him to become an artist, for he had an unusually good memory and exceptional aptitude for music. But mathematics was one of his most favourite subjects in his primary school days.

After he entered Pyongyang Middle School No. 1 in April 2011, he studied so hard that he never failed to take the first place in the school-wide academic contests of different subjects.

He was enrolled in the Physics Faculty of Kim Il Sung University in April 2014.

He studied against time to possess a profound knowledge about the basic science and optoelectronics and their fundamental theories.

Recollecting those days, his mother Kim Yong Ran said: Ji Song’s aim was to compete with the world. Literally, it was a challenge against him.

In his junior year at the university he was involved in the nonlinear optics research team. Under the guidance of Prof. Im Song Jin, PhD and candidate academician, he did his part in conducting the basic research into the photo-responsive properties of nanostructure at world standards.

He systematized his research findings and made them public on an international academic journal. At that time one of the international academic jury spoke highly of his paper, saying that it was concise, clear and logical in composition.

During his university days he won Kim Il Sung scholarship and University Student Scientific Research Prize. Particularly, he was awarded Kim Il Sung Youth Honour Prize, the top honour for the Korean youth, in March 2018.

After graduating from the university he went through a postgraduate course during which he obtained his doctorate in physics by presenting a paper related to magnetic plasmon modulation.

In that period he successfully carried out the research project about the nonlinear optical phenomena in the nano plasmon resonance which won the February 16 Sci-Tech Prize, the highest honour in the science and technology sector of the country. In February this year he also won the natural science prize newly instituted by the state for his successful research project of the “interaction between the light and material in the nanostructure and its application”.

He has so far published more than 20 papers in the NI- and SCI-level international academic journals and written six other essays and three booklets and took the lead in pioneering the subject on “analysis and simulation of the light propagation mode” and made its contents practical and comprehensive to meet world standards.

The young scientist in his twenties still works hard for his scientific research.
