On August 25, 1948 before the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was founded, the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung visited sub-constituency No. 10 of constituency No. 7 of Pyongyang Municipality to vote for the first election of deputies to the Supreme People’s Assembly.
As he alighted from the car, the crowd who were there to attend the election cheered him enthusiastically.
He headed for the polling station, before he stopped as he saw the corridor covered with a roll of white silk cloth.
Although the cloth was rolled out as a token of the unanimous sincerity of all voters, he declined to walk on it, saying that we were not allowed to step on it as it should be used to make clothes for the people.
At 6 sharp he cast the first ballot and told officials that that day was really a very significant day when a genuine people’s government was set up and that although our country had a long history, we had never elected the representatives of the workers and peasants with their own hands and appointed them to power organs.
Pleased to see the voters in holiday attire coming to the polling station while singing and dancing, he said: Look, how delightful they are. They must be very happy that they are to establish a new country and a new government they have longed for. It has been proved once again that they became the masters of the country.
In the past we organized and waged a bloody struggle, getting over all sorts of difficulties, to establish the genuine people’s revolutionary government through democratic election like today’s and build a prosperous new country and society. Many people fought shedding blood to bring about today’s happiness and auspicious event. Therefore, all of us should not remain indifferent to this election but cast a ballot with a patriotic zeal to contribute to the prosperity of the country and the happiness of the rising generations, he added.
