is a folk game of Korean children.
A top has long been made of such hard wood as birch, jujube and black walnut trees and the knot of pine tree.
It was mainly in the shape of a cone usually five to ten centimetres in height. A top whose both upper and lower parts are pointed is called janggu top, the one whose side is hollow jul top and that whose base is low pagaji top.
The whip of a top was made by fastening a twisted silk or cotton string to a 50-centimetre-long wooden stick as thin as a finger.
The game was mainly played by children aged between six and twelve.
There were various methods of playing the game: Two children whipped their tops for a certain time or some times before stopping to see whose top turned round longer, two children or two teams made their spinning tops run into one another to see whose top turned round longer, children divided into teams started from a certain place and got back to the starting line with tops set in motion and two teams saw which side was the first to charge into the other’s position.
The game, which is mainly played on ice in winter, is good for the physical training of children. As they usually make by themselves their tops which are of various colours and shapes and turn round well, their manual skills improve and their creative thinking faculty develops.
