One day in April Juche 81(1992), President Kim Il Sung met a group of Westernjournalists on a visit to the DPRK.
In the course of a talk with him, the head of thegroup was so attracted by the President’s easy-going personality he asked himwithout reserve what the secret of his good health and his hobby were, sayingthat many people said the President was enjoying the health of a man in his 50sthough he was in his 80s.
After looking at him for a moment, the President saidhe had no special hobby or diversion worthy of mention. He continued: If theycan be claimed to be hobbies, I can say I have two kinds of hobbies. I enjoyreading books and going among the people to spend time with them.
Much impressed by his remarks, the head of the grouplooked up at the President in surprise and said:
I have so far heard from many heads of state andself-important politicians that hunting, fishing, swimming and entertainmentare their hobbies, but never have I heard that reading books and going amongthe people to spend time with them are hobbies. Your Excellency President’shobbies are too simple and I wonder whether they can be called hobbies, butyour hobbies carry a meaning as vast as the universe. Your hobbies are, indeed,the ones of a world great man both in name and in reality, which no one elsecan have in theworld.
