Mt Suyang borders Haeju City and Sinwon County in South Hwanghae Province of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The Suyangsan resort is featured by Fortress of Mt Suyang that is linked by rolling peaks centred on Jangdae Peak and broad valleys that sprawl as the peak gradually descends southeastward, where cliffs, waterfalls and forests blend together to make a dramatic scenery.
Affected by the West Sea of Korea, the region has warmer climate than the inland areas, with fog often hanging in the air between March and July.
The valleys are narrow and deep as they are eroded by the streams flowing into the mouth of the Jaeryong River and the Haeju Bay, and they boast several waterfalls including Suyangsan Falls.
Suyangsan Falls, one of high waterfalls in the country, is a two-tier one, 128 metres high vertically, 186 metres long and 12.5 metres wide.
The waterfall is known as one of the eight scenic spots of Haeju for its different natural beauty from season to season in harmony with the surrounding rich flora.
The Mt Suyang area is designated as the Suyangsan Plant Reserve.
Covering an area of 1 400 hectares, the reserve is of great significance in the study of the distribution of plants.
The plant distribution in the area is multifarious, especially as some indigenous plants from the south temperature zone are distributed.
In particular, Puksung parsley, an indigenous species which is the only family and only genus in the world, grows on the rocks of Mt Puksung.
Mt Suyang is home to such animals as roe deer, badger, wild boar and raccoon dog, and such birds as oriole, pheasant and owl.
On and around the mountain are also historical sites including Fortress of Mt Suyang, Jihwan Pavilion, Sami Pavilion, stone-piled ice store of Haeju and five-storey pagoda of Haeju.
Fortress of Mt Suyang was built during the period of the Koguryo Kingdom (277 BC–AD 668).
In the Mt Suyang area, there are Cedrus deodara of Haeju, Taxodium disticum of Haeju and Paulownia tomentosa of Haeju, all inscribed as natural monuments of the DPRK. There are also beautiful pavilions, observation platforms, restaurants and other cultural and recreational facilities suited to the surrounding scenery.
