In the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, those who fought bravely in the three-year-long Fatherland Liberation War in the early 1950s are greatly revered as war veterans and special care is taken to make them live a happy life for the rest of their lives.
There are sanatoria dedicated to war veterans in Pyongyang and provinces, and they provide them with all conditions for cultural and leisure activities and health care.
The Pyongyang Municipal Sanatorium for War Veterans nestles at the foot of picturesque Mt Ryongak.
The health resort, inaugurated in July Juche 106 (2017), sprawls over several thousand square metres, and it is equipped with a variety of service facilities, especially for medical treatment, physical exercise and massage. Besides, it has a pavilion, angling site and other places for recreation.
The cozy building in good harmony with fresh green trees, clean and refreshing air, chirps of wild birds, murmur of a stream and other special natural environment makes the old people feel at home.
War veterans enjoy their stay, doing exercises, chatting and doing other things to meet their physical and psychological needs, hobbies and tastes.
Exercise with apparatuses is a daily routine.
In the amusement hall they play janggi (Korean chess), yut (four-stick game) and other games in a competitive manner with youthful spirit and vigour. Some in their 90s play table tennis and billiards.
Some others stroll about at the foot of Mt Ryongak, climb to the top of the mountain or watch TV and video programmes, looking back upon their past life.
Birthday spreads are given to them so that they can have a good time with their old friends in a family atmosphere.
Kim Ik Chun from Rangnang District said that he didn’t know how his 15-day holiday slipped away and that he wished he would live another hundred years each time he enjoyed the holiday there.
Rim Kum Dan from Mangyongdae District said that she felt more invigorated as she was provided with nutritive and appetizing meals every day and various kinds of tonics, adding that she was much better thanks to the kind medical service.
“The government provides great care and benefit to the veterans,” said Manageress Jo Song Sim. “We are trying our best to take good care of them so that the state benefit may reach them as much as possible.”
More than 70 years have passed since the ceasefire, but the war veterans are still enjoying life to the full commanding public respect and love as the great victorious wartime generation.
