The DPRK is now directing efforts to reinvigorating tourism.

While continuously encouraging traditional forms of tourism like sightseeing tour of scenic spots, historical sites, monumental structures and educational and cultural institutions, it works to develop tailored tours of various themes.

Visits to the central and provincial history museums and historical sites inscribed on the world cultural heritage list and cultural experiencing tours including tasting of Korean dishes and experiencing of Korean national customs stimulate the interest of foreign tourists in the history and culture of Korea.

Through hiking and camping in major celebrated mountains like Paektu, Myohyang, Kumgang and Chilbo, visit to and trip by planes of old models and photographing them, and biking tour, tourists can relish the beautiful scenery of the country and indulge in their hobbies.

What is also impressive is the tour of the Munsu Water Park, Masikryong Ski Resort, Yangdok Hot Spring Resort, etc.

In addition, new unique tourist attractions are under construction.

Recently, efforts have been made to turn celebrated mountains and scenic areas on the east and west coasts into world-class tourist destinations and build tourist attractions in provinces as suited to their local features.

A typical example is the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Resort which is nearing its completion. Situated on the east coast of the country, it is expected to fully satisfy the demands of local and foreign tourists.

Attention is also paid to developing mountain tour as suited to the natural and geographical characteristics of the country in which mountains account for nearly 80 per cent of the territory.

Samjiyon, a northern mountainous city, is being turned into a unique all-season tourist complex, while the Phothae area is being developed into a mountainous tourist resort for sporting and experiencing activities.

Amid efforts being made to perfect infrastructure of tourism, hotels are being renovated and new hotels, tourist roads and service amenities are under construction. Measures have been taken to open new air and sea routes and improve transport and hotel services.

Domestic tourism is also encouraged.

The Pyongyang Municipal Tourist Souvenir Exhibition-2024 held in March was crowded with visitors as it offered various services including sales of souvenirs, tourist information service and introduction of itineraries of various themes like sightseeing flight over Pyongyang, visit to Rangnang Museum, Kwangbop Temple and Mirim Riding Club, and sports and amusement games.

Choe Chang Ryong
