The Pohyon Temple is located in Mt Myohyang, one of the celebrated mountains in Korea.
Built for the first time in the period of Koryo (918-1392) as an auxiliary building of the temple, the Hwajang Hermitage has been rebuilt several times since 1654.
The present one was built in 1818.
It is of four bays (11.95m) on facade and two bays (5.55m) on both sides.
The cornerstones are made with natural stones and a picture of an imaginary human being living in heaven is painted on the front wall. And the floor along the front wall of the rooms is covered with planks.
The hermitage was used as a school for teaching Buddhist scriptures as well as Confucian literature.
So many people who worshipped Buddhism and Confucianism visited it. The Buddhist monks decorated the hermitage gorgeously in order to impress Buddhism on visitors.
The hermitage is a precious historical relic showcasing the architectural skills related to temples in the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910). It stands on the route to Manphok Valley of Mt Myohyang.
