Everyone in the area of Komdok, South Hamgyong Province, says that “I have received a new, nice house” and “Nowadays I often sing of transformed Komdok in spite of myself.”
It is thanks to the devoted efforts of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un that the area has been renovated as a mountain gorge town.
Four years ago the area encompassing a large-scale mineral production base was hit by typhoon No.9. Damages were tremendous.
According to a rough estimate, thousands of dwelling houses and dozens of public buildings were destroyed or inundated and tens of thousands of metres of roads were washed away and scores of bridges broken, resulting in total traffic disruption.
On receiving a report on this urgent situation, Kim Jong Un convened the Sixth Enlarged Meeting of the Seventh Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea and issued an order of the WPK Central Military Commission on the rehabilitation work in the afflicted area.
One day in October, a month later, he visited the rehabilitation project site by train along the dangerous railways, which had been temporarily laid.
While touring the project site, he said to the accompanying officials: I would feel remorseful if new houses are built only for the flood victims; it is true that the country’s economic situation is difficult at present but it can never be delayed any longer to provide the people in the Komdok area with nice houses; we should build modern houses for the local people at the earliest possible date so that they can lead a more cultured life.
He went on to express his determination to build modern 25 000 flats along the long gorge from Kumgol and Tonsan districts to Taehung and Ryongyang in a matter of several years.
Then, looking over the surroundings, he said that if people compared the current appearance of the area with the one transformed five years later, they could clearly see how it was completely transformed under the leadership of the Party.
This is how the area turned into a modern town that boasts perfect architectural beauty and goes well with the features of the local landform.
