Situated in Kogunyong-ri, about eight kilometres east of the seat of Tongnim County, North Phyongan Province, Tongnim Falls has been known from olden times as one of the eight scenic spots in the Kwanso area of Korea.
It has also been called Ok Falls for its crystal-clear water.
It is only about five metres high, but its current is so powerful that a legendary tale has it that a hunchback had his back straightened once he had a shower under it.
It has been used for a shower bath from olden times. It is said that if one has a shower on a hot summer day, one is relieved of all anxieties and diseases and feels ten years younger.
The annual mean temperature in the area of the falls is 9.1℃ while the annual mean precipitation is 1 053mm.
Simple forest of pine trees mainly covers the area.
The valley is home to such trees as maple, hazelnut, aspen and elm, and such shrubs as azalea, Weigela florida and sapphireberry sweetleaf.
Many animals live in the area, typical examples being roe deer, hare, raccoon dog, badger, squirrel, wild boar, ringdove and blue magpie.
Still preserved in the area is Thongju Fort from which the Korean ancestors dealt a crushing blow to the foreign aggressors in 1010.
Above the falls are Ryong (dragon) Rock and Ryong Pool, from which, according to legendary tales, dragons used to ascend to the heaven.
Below the falls is a saddle-shaped rock.
When green foliage of pine, oak and maple growing on the Ryong Rock and perpendicular cliffs covers the area and birds chirp in the sky and in the woods, the falls presents its gentle appearance more vividly.
