The Pukchang Thermal Power Complex strives to recycle soot, a by-product from power generation.
The soot produced up to now since the inauguration of the complex amounts to tens of millions of tons, with a daily output of thousands of tons.
“It requires considerable investment, technical updating and a new production line to recycle many elements of the soot such as unburnt carbon. However, it is a must both for the future of the complex and for the long-term interests of the State,” said the chief engineer of the complex.
For a dozen or so years the technicians at the complex have separated unburnt carbon from the soot to make burned coal, and now they work to make activated carbon from the burned coal.
A few years ago, they succeeded in making the soot magnetized compound fertilizer.
To produce it, the technicians figured up the amount of nutrient elements needed to increase the yield of rice and maize by one ton, and made an accurate analysis of the components of the soot.
The soot was rich in potassium and silicon.
What had to be done to make the compound fertilizer was to add necessary amounts of some more elements.
The technicians brought and burned phosphorus concentrate to supplement the phosphorus component, and burned locally-available dolomite and treated it with a relevant reagent to obtain magnesium component.
In this way, they managed to produce the soot magnetized compound fertilizer which is more effective than nitrogen fertilizer.
Not content with this, they built and ran a pilot plant to collect the iron remaining in the soot, obtaining high-quality iron oxide concentrate. And they worked on a project to extract silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide from the soot, with the result that the caustic soda used to produce aluminum oxide can be recycled.
Scientists from Kim Il Sung University and the State Academy of Sciences are helping them with their work to recycle the soot 100 percent.
“This is not an ordinary recycling but an establishment of an entirely new business. It is really a huge, promising one,” they say.
