The Korean language has a developed and refined linguistic system and structure, and it is well known for its own alphabet.
The original Korean script, or Hunminjongum , dates back to the 15th century.
Hunminjongum was an alphabetic script with 28 letters, which were easy enough to write and express both spoken Korean and foreign languages around the world. The current Korean alphabet has 40 letters—21 vowels and 19 consonants.
The Korean alphabet is so scientific in its principle of creation and so systematic in writing each letter that it is easy to learn and write.
The world linguistic circles are of the opinion that written Korean should not be included in any language group but be classified as the most developed script.
Not a few linguists and experts in informatics around the world appreciate that the Korean alphabet is the most ideal as the universal language or computer language.
Once Oxford University ranked all alphabets in the world in terms of scientific accuracy, rationality and originality, with Korean topping the rankings.
There is a museum in Osaka, Japan, where different written languages the world over are on display. Hunminjongum is tagged as “the most scientific script.”
On October 1, 1997, UNESCO inscribed Hunminjongum on its Memory of the World Register. To honour King Sejong (1397-1450), the fourth monarch of the feudal Joson dynasty who commissioned a group of scholars to invent Hunminjongum , the UN organization instituted the prize of Sejong the Great in 1986 and has since awarded it to individuals and organizations that made a contribution to the anti-illiteracy campaign for humankind.
Hunminjongum was rated as the best in a research project conducted by UNESCO between 1998 and late 2002 in order to find out the most appropriate language among more than 2 900 languages in the world.
February 21 is the International Mother Tongue Day.
