Kim Hong Suk, chief of the Taeri felling substation of the Sinyang Forestry Station, was among the workers of merit who were specially invited to the celebrations of the 76th founding anniversary of the DPRK in September last year.
Participants in the celebrations were much surprised to hear the ordinary woman climb up and down rugged mountains, a challenge even to men, to fell timber.
The Taeri felling substation is located in a mountainous area, 1 800 metres above sea level and more than 40 kilometres away from the Yonsa County seat which is over a hundred kilometres away from the city of Chongjin, North Hamgyong Province.
Two years ago, when she came as the chief of the substation, the employees looked at her both with concern and interest.
The substation was the most backward unit in the station, and she herself was unfamiliar with felling. But she was a woman of unusual warmth and leadership.
She told her employees that when the country had been seething with the Chollima movement, the substation produced a twice Chollima workteam and a Hero, and as the preceding generations did they could fare well. She worked and shared accommodation with fellers on the lumbering ground in mountains.
Kim struggled with armful-thick trees in blizzards, but at breaks she got together with fellers to encourage them. She would say though they were remote in the northern tip of the country the timber they were producing would be used across the country to work miracles and achieve prosperity, and called for redoubling efforts to make the substation renowned at home.
She was more like a mother than just a chief, and her sincerity won the hearts of the male fellows.
Her dream was shared by all her employees.
They turned out as one and drastically increased the output in a few months, carrying out their annual production plan by February last year.
They went on to plant 400 000 saplings, build a new tree nursery and facelift their workplace.
Now the substation stands out not only in the station but also in the province.
“We fellers work in the hard-to-reach forests, but we do with a mind to make our workplace a place that contributes to national prosperity and supports the country,” Kim says to visitors.
