A social climate is prevailing in the DPRK where teachers are respected and given prominence.
An old woman named Jong Sun Yong lives in Namsin-dong No. 2, Songyo District, Pyongyang. She taught for a long time at a senior middle school in Sosong District in the city until she retired.
Years have passed since she quit her job, yet many of her old students still come to see her. Among them are army officers, teachers, artistes, athlete as well as officials of important units. Although they are busy doing their job, they never fail to visit her home on her birthdays and public holidays to congratulate her. If they can’t come under pressure from work, some call her to offer their greetings.
Some years ago they helped her make arrangements for her daughter’s wedding. Recently, when her son volunteered to work for rehabilitating the flood-hit area in North Phyongan Province, they encouraged him to work hard giving him some aids they prepared with sincerity.
Whenever Jong expresses gratitude for their concern, they say that they still cherish respect for their teacher and that they are duty bound to do so.
There are similar stories about teachers.
In the DPRK there are many teachers who put their heart and soul into tending the future of the country with parental care. A woman teacher carried a girl student, who was unable to walk, on her back to and from school along the mountain path for several years. And a teacher volunteered in her girlhood to teach at the branch school on an island and worked there for over 30 years.
Some teachers visited an honoured disabled soldier-turned student to give lecture and helped him develop his talent even his parents had failed to discover.
The socialist country based on the close relationship between teachers and students is filled with noble moral ethics and beautiful life.
