In Korea March is the period when the air of spring is felt all over.
In the month there are two of the 24 seasonal sub-divisions of the year: kyongchip and chunbun . In general, the two seasonal sub-divisions fall on March 5 or 6 and around 21, respectively, by the solar calendar.
Kyongchip means the end of hibernation. In this period, hibernating insects begin to move, awaking from a deep sleep by thawing snow, rumbling thunders and falling rain.
Chunbun means mid-spring, when the duration of day and night are almost the same.
Around this period, it often blows hard, but the weather grows mild and the ground frozen all winter long thaws completely.
From olden times the Korean people, with the approach of this season, have repaired the fences of their homes and cleared away all the traces from the previous season to keep their homes in clean environment before doing farm work.
They also have made delicious foods with sprouting wild herbs, typically shepherd’s purse and giant garlic among them.
They collected different medicinal herbs to use them for future purposes, and danced and sang wishing they would reap a rich harvest in the year.
This year’s kyongchip and chunbun fall on March 5 and 20, respectively.
