Last year the Hyangjong Farm in Paechon County, South Hwanghae Province, increased paddy rice yield per hectare by over 500kg by introducing a laser technology.
This technology was developed by a research team at the Physics Faculty of Kim Il Sung University.
By taking into consideration the important role of light in the growth of crops and the unique properties of laser beams, the researchers manufactured portable semiconductor laser irradiation device which is simple in structure and easy to handle.
This device helps promote the growth of crops. It improves the activities of enzymes which are related to the germination and breathing of crops and accelerates their metabolism and cell division, making them grow fast, ripen early and yield more.
Kong Wan Gyu, manager of the farm, said: Last year we used this device in paddy rice cultivation; it reduced the seed consumption and hastened the growing period of rice by about seven days; it was good in keeping it safe from diseases and pests; the grains ripened well and the weight of 1 000 grains increased; in particular the effect of laser was better when we used the device after we applied additional fertilizer for the leaves.
He went on to say that as the condition of the crops improved, they easily overcame drought and cold weather.
Saying that his workteam enjoyed much benefit from the laser technology both in paddy-field farming and dry-field farming, Kim Thae Sun, leader of Workteam No. 10, explained that it increased maize production by over one ton per hectare last year by introducing the technology.
Another farm gathered a rich harvest in a field which had been flooded for a week with the help of the device.
Now the device is attracting the attention of agricultural officials and workers.
