One day in early March 1962 the great leader Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912-July 8, 1994) had a talk with leaders of neighbourhood units over the living of the citizens of the capital city. During the talk, he asked an official if there was a primary school in the area around Taedong Gate.
Hardly knowing what he wanted to know, the official answered that there was a college there, but not a primary school. With a serious expression, Kim Il Sung said: While travelling, I often see young students crossing main roads on their way to school. It is dangerous for children to go to school across main roads with heavy traffic.
The leaders of neighbourhood units were deeply moved to hear him. All of them were mothers. But they had seldom worried about their children going to school across main roads.
Kim Il Sung continued: To prevent young students from having to cross main roads on their way to school, districts should designate schools for them with care. We should ensure that they do not have to cross main roads to go to school by building a new primary school for them or moving the college and repurposing it for a primary school. We should provide children with the best things and conditions.
This is how a primary school (present-day Kim Song Ju Primary School) came into being in Taedongmun-dong in Central District. Later a statue of young Kim Il Sung was set up in the compound of the school.
