Cultural heritage items are a pride of the Korean people and valuable wealth of the country. Recently 17 items in the DPRK have been newly inscribed on the national and local intangible cultural heritage lists.
Thirteen of them are national intangible cultural heritage items―legends related with Mt Kuwol, the custom of moving into new house, folk instrumental music Sinau, two folk dance pieces, calligraphy, top spinning, the custom related to songi mushroom growing on Mt Chilbo, noodles garnished with sliced raw fish and porridge boiled with mussels, etc.
More than 80 legends related with Mt Kuwol have so far been collected and arranged.
Some of them are related with King Tangun who founded Ancient Joson (early 30th century BC-108 BC), Koreans’ patriotic struggle against aggression waged around Mt Kuwol, natural scenery of Mt Kuwol, good manners and customs of the locals and so on.
The custom of moving into new house also has a long history.
In accordance with traditional etiquette the Koreans help their neighbours, relatives or friends carry their household articles to their new houses and present them with something good for their life in the new houses.
Today the custom of moving into new house is being supplemented and enriched with new contents. It serves as an opportunity to implant into the people the ardent love for their motherland and promote harmony and unity among them.
The newly registered local intangible cultural heritage items include kimchi flavoured with coriander, boiled pheasant meat, the custom related with the fruit of matrimony vine growing in Kyongsong and others.
