The Mt Paektu area located in the northernmost part of the DPRK is abundant in tourist resources.
The area unfolds distinctive scenery with natural tourist resources including geology and topography formed in the course of several volcanic eruptions and natural environment of highlands inhabited by a wide range of animals and plants.
It boasts tourist resources consisting of geological and topographical sites. Featured mainly by magnificence, serenity and peculiarity, these resources can be used for tourist activities geared at appreciating aesthetic value.
The very high and steep mountain landforms including Chongun Rock and the mysteriously-shaped rocks in Mt Sobaek, the deep and precipitous valleys and ravines and the rugged landforms are favourable for the tourist activities like mountaineering and exploring. The scenic spots including Mt Paektu, Lake Samji and Rimyongsu and wonderful natural scenes add more to the majesty of the Mt Paektu area.
The Mt Paektu area was registered as a global geopark in April 2025, further highlighting the geological significance and tourist value of Mt Paektu.
And the Paektusan Biosphere Reserve was registered as an international biosphere reserve for its rich eco-tourist resources. Situated at the highest place of the DPRK, the reserve is characterized by diversified species composition according to different climatic zones.
The eco-tourist resources of the area are high in ornamental value as they include comprehensive natural scenes combined with fauna and flora and individual animals and plants of high aesthetic value.
The reserve is a habitat for scores of species of animals such as tiger, deer and brown bear and more than a hundred species of birds including black grouse and pheasant. Rhododendron, an alpine plant that produces flowers even in the snow of Mt Paektu, and Salvelinus malma m. chonjiensis among them are particularly high in ornamental value.
The Mt Paektu area is also rich in meteorological and climatic tourist resources for enjoying the scenes and climatotherapy.
The tourist resources such as sunrise over Mt Paektu, tornado on Lake Chon and other scenes are unique to the area. And the local climate is good for strengthening the skin, treating respiratory diseases, retarding aging and so on. Besides, there are the resources for balneotherapy including Paektu hot spring and the resources for ski tourism like the Phothae area.
