On March 18 1971, President Kim Il Sung saw exhibition matches of table-tennis players who would attend the world table tennis championships.
After the matches, he called the players to him and praised them, saying they played the matches well. And he asked them if they could win the world championships.
All players got up as if they had promised each other and clearly answered him that they could win the championships.
Hearing their answer full of confidence, the President said that they should win the championships and they had a good chance of winning the event and noted it was most important not to be conceited.
And then he told them about the experiences and lessons other Korean players had gained from international matches in the past. All of you were cool and unembarrassed in today’s matches and that is important in matches, he said. He added they should keep their head even if they lost one or two points first and fight hard to the last to beat the opponents. Logically, in battles enemy should be neither overestimated nor underestimated, but in real fight you should belittle the enemy and fight with confidence in victory, he said, adding that every player should adhere to these principles strictly in the matches.
