The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea boasts so many kinds of mineral resources that it can be called a treasure trove of the world’s mineral deposits.
There are hundreds of kinds of minerals known in the country, with dozens of kinds available for economic development.
The DPRK is rich not only in iron ore and other ferrous metallic minerals but also in copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver and other nonferrous metallic ones, as well as rare metallic deposits. In particular, holdongsok, suanite and other indigenous minerals were named after the relevant areas where they are deposited.
It also abounds in minerals for agriculture.
Minerals containing trace elements such as silicon, magnesium and manganese are used to make substitute mineral fertilizers which are conducive to increasing grain output.
The multiplicity of the kinds of mineral deposits in the DPRK is seemingly attributable to the long formation of its crust, several rounds of crustal movements and the diversity of magmatic activities.
The crust of the territory has a long history.
Scientists applied modern means and methods to identify the rocks and minerals that were formed 3.6 billion years ago in different parts of the country, thus revealing the history of the crust.
According to data available, most of graphite deposits in the country date back to 2.5 billion years, and the Ryongyang and Taehung magnesite deposits and most of the nonferrous metallic deposits in the Tanchon and Hochon areas to 2 billion years.
The country’s position in a geologically unique and rare place adds to the multiplicity.
The DPRK is tectonically located on the eastern margin of the Eurasian continental crust or in the western vicinity of the Pacific Ocean crust. Therefore, it has been influenced by a range of crustal movements in different stages caused by crashes between the continental and oceanic crusts.
Such crustal movements resulted in unique deposits in the country. For example, the Tanchon area alone in the northeastern part of the country is famous for its rich vein of minerals.
The DPRK works to make the most of the mineral resources for its economic development and keep them under good protection.
