During the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953), many children of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea formed guards and fought bravely against the US imperialist aggressors who killed their parents, brothers and sisters and trampled down their dreams.
Among them was the one led by Kim Hyong Bong, a student at the then Pyoksong Middle School in South Hwanghae Province.
The children’s guards consisting of several children began to improvise “bottle hand grenades” with gunpowder and armed themselves with weapons obtained at battlefields. They also performed the duty as the ri self-defence corps at their village.
In February 1951, they arrested two spies infiltrating from the sea.
Encouraged by their first feat, more children in the village volunteered to join the guards.
In April that year, they arrested four armed spies hiding on Ssuk Island and captured two rifles. In summer, they killed four armed enemies who invaded into the Sojae village.
Later, the guards developed into a company with four platoons. It was renamed Jo Ok Hui Children’s Self-defence Corps after the chairwoman of the Pyoksong county women’s union committee who had fought bravely in defence of her country.
The self-defence corps was engaged in mopping up the runaway enemy and reactionaries around their village and beyond.
From January 1951 to the end of the war, they fought 45 battles in the area of South Hwanghae Province centred on Pyoksong County, in which they killed, wounded or captured over 200 enemies and captured lots of weapons and ammunition.
Kim Hyong Bong was awarded a badge of the national model member of the Korean Children’s Union.
In recognition of the corps’ feats, President Kim Il Sung made sure that Kim Hyong Bong was awarded Order of the National Flag Third Class, and sent him a pistol as a gift.
At that time, the boy was fifteen years old.
During the war, four members of the corps received state commendations.
