Soon after Korea’s liberation on August 15, 1945, President Kim Il Sung paid deep concern to enlisting women, who accounted for half of the country’s population, in the effort to build a new country.
In October 1945, he called an official of the women’s emancipation union to inquire about the work of the organization, and heard about troubles in her work.
She told him that some parents were making a fuss about their daughters-in-law engaging in social activities, saying women are obliged to stay at home and bring up children well. Some men even were keeping their wives from going out, saying that women cannot do something big, she added.
She complained that in the liberated country it was so unfair to women who had been maltreated and scorned so much during the Japs’ military rule. Lost in thought for a while, Kim Il Sung said resolutely that it was needed to set up day-care facilities.
He explained to the wide-eyed official as follows:
Gender equality is not something to be called for merely by words. Even if it was legally ensured, gender equality is hard to realize in reality. It is necessary to establish day-care facilities in order to free the women of the heavy burden of household chores and help them take part in the building of a new country together with men.
“Thank you. Thank you so much. Women must be happy about it,” the woman official said with great excitement.
This is how the March 8 Nursery came into being. Later, such facilities sprang up in different parts of the country and Korean women could turn out for the building of a new society.
