Koryo ceramics are a general term for the ceramic ware manufactured in the period of the Koryo dynasty (918-1392).
As part of the Korean cultural heritage that shows refined artistic talent and a high level of science and technology, Koryo ceramics represent the arts of Koryo and occupy a prominent position in the history of the mediaeval craftsmanship in the world.
In view of background colour, they can be divided into those of green, white, black, brown and other colours. According to decorative patterns they can also be set apart into those of embossed, engraved, inlaid and other decorative patterns.
Celadon porcelain is a cut above the rest.
It was most valued as a cultural treasure or the acme of ceramics, and, in particular, pattern-inlaid celadon captured the imagination of people.
More than anything else Koryo ceramics are featured by unique colours.
Jade colour is the most beautiful and renowned among colours that give an air of diversity and harmony to Koryo ceramics.
The jade colour as green as that mirrored on a white stone in crystal-clear water is graceful and elegant enough to represent the sentiment of the Korean people.
Porcelain in this colour was called celadon and it became synonymous with Koryo ceramics all over the world.
Koryo ceramics came in a variety of articles such as cup, bottle, bowl, plate, kettle, pot, flowerpot, incense burner and brazier. Patterns were sculptured, painted and inlaid.
A wide range of patterns like cloud, crane, reed, willow, wild goose, mandarin dark, chrysanthemum, grape and lotus were engraved on articles of all shapes.
Koryo ceramics, a harmonious whole of unique colour, pattern and shape, have carved out a name worldwide.
