Recently scientists at the Biodiversity Institute of the State Academy of Sciences have reconfirmed the major habitats in the DPRK for migratory birds (water birds) and completed a new design of the reserve network for them.
They toured the wetlands in the country to identify the areas where migratory birds (water birds) are distributed in large numbers and to increase the area of the reserves stage by stage. They clarified how over 100 species of migratory birds including swan goose, common pochard and long-tailed duck select their habitats.
On basis of this, they worked out a habitat distribution map and identified the major distribution areas by applying a geographical information system technique. And they regularly conducted seasonal and yearly survey of the existing migratory bird (wetland) reserves, newly confirmed reserves and candidate places that meet the international standards, and completed the design of the reserve network in such a way as to increase their area step by step.
This has provided another sci-tech guarantee for protecting the animal resources including migratory birds in the reserves and major distribution areas that form a local network for the protection of the migratory birds (wetland).
