Zeal for introducing advanced farming methods is soaring across the DPRK.
One of the 30 best farms of 2024, the Toksong Farm under the South Hwanghae Provincial Rural Economy Committee introduced a method of applying fertilizers through the irrigation of paddy fields, thereby increasing per-hectare rice yield.
The method improves the efficacy of fertilizers by dropping their solution at a certain speed into the entrance of paddy field through which the irrigation water flows in to make the fertilizers’ elements to be evenly distributed to the field horizontally and infiltrated to a certain depth vertically.
The farmers at the farm spoke highly of the method, saying that it makes fertilizers’ elements evenly applied to soil and every rice plant, helping all the rice plants grow well equally, that as they apply different kinds of fertilizers in a balanced manner according to the growth of rice plants and soil conditions, they can ensure the nutritional balance of rice plants, that applying fertilizers together with insecticides and herbicides show tangible effect on weeding and pest control and that as the farmer in charge of water control of paddy fields can apply fertilizers as well, the method helps save manpower.
The dry-field rice farming in Pakchon County of North Phyongan Province also draws attention.
What is noticeable in dry-field rice farming in the county is that its farms have introduced superior species of dry-field rice which grows fast and is highly resistant to drought and diseases, as well as the non-tillage mulching cultivation method.
The non-tillage mulching cultivation is a superior farming method that improves the soil nutrient structure, increases the number of microorganisms in soil and enhances soil fertility, thus protecting fields.
The method paid off.
As there was no need to plough fields, fuel could be saved. In addition, the method helped dry-field rice plants strike roots quickly and develop branches well, ensuring their healthy growth.
The farmers in the county grew the dry-field rice seedlings in seedbeds as they do with paddy-field rice seedlings and planted them in the right time as required by technical regulations, thus opening a bright prospect for a good harvest.
