One Sunday in February 2012 the respected General Secretary Kim Jong Un, who is always concerned aboutthe improvement of the people’s diet, visited the Samilpho Specialities Factory.
Saying that it seemed to be afew days before when he visited the factory together with Chairman Kim Jong Il, but three years hadalready passed and that the factory had done a lot of things during the period,the General Secretary looked round various production processes of the factoryfor a long time. Then he stopped at the workplace of the makkolli (traditional Korean liquor) workteam.
After hearing an official’sreport that the factory was producing thousands of bottles of makkolli a day and the liquor from the factorywas very popular among Pyongyang citizens, he held a bottle of makkolli on the display stand and openedits cap.
Then an official tried to dissuadehim, saying quietly that the weather was cold. But he said he would taste thedrink as a member of the people, and told the officials to join him in tastingit to see if the corn makkolli mightreally be popular among Pyongyang citizens.
Now, after asking an official abouthis impression of the drink, the General Secretary said that from olden timesthe Koreans, during work on fields in hot summer, sat in the shade of a large zelkovatree and drank cool makkolli from jars,which women had brought after keeping them in spring water, singing a song ofrich harvest.
Everybody might like the drinkas it was sweet and sour and refreshing and it seemed to contain much sugar asit tasted good, he said to the officials, earnestly asking them to further improvethe quality of the drink so that it could become a favourite one of the people.
That day, after being reportedabout the problems arising in normalizing the production of the drink, he tookbenevolent measures for the factory to become the one for the people, a unitserving them, from A to Z and made sure that the state bore the relevant burden.
