Han Il Ryong, marathon runnerof the Amnokgang Sports Club, won a gold medal by renewing the championshipsrecord in the men’s marathon of the 20th Asian Marathon Championships,thus demonstrating the dignity and honour of Juche Korea to the world.
Han was born into a an ordinary farmer’s family inRinsan County of North Hwanghae Province, and his unusual aptitude for athleticswas discovered by an instructor of the sports school in the county. Han was a gentleboy of few words, but once in training he was fiercely competitive not to lagbehind others. So, the instructor worked hard to train him to be a good racer.
As a result, Han proved successful in nationalgames in his days at the sports school before beginning to play at theAmnokgang Sports Club in September 2015.
After practising marathon techniques one by one underthe guidance of Choe Hyong Chol, coach of the sports club, he made his debut andentered the rankings at an international marathon held in Pyongyang in 2019.Later, he kept training hard with an ambition to excel world aces and thusdistinguished himself in several international competitions, including themen’s marathon at the 19th Asian Games.
At the 20th Asian Marathon Championships held inChina in late March this year, he crossedthe finish line over 30 seconds before the runner-up, establishing a new recordof the championships by clocking 2 hours, 11 minutes and 18 seconds and winningthe trophy and gold medal.
Without slackening his spirit, he trained harderand thus won the men’s 5 000m race at the Chinese Taipei Athletics Open 2025held in June, amazing the spectators by leading all the other runners fornearly 4 000 metres.
Now, he is training hard to bag another gold medal.
