Ri Un Suk, chief nurse of the Usi County People’s Hospital in Jagang Province, has many nicknames like our nurse , our mother and our chief nurse .
Patients say that they seem to recover at her mere approach to their beds and at her mere inquiry about their health conditions.
Nurses should be an incarnation of the most sincere human love, because they perform the important duty of protecting and looking after patients’ lives and health. Through their manner and looks, patients guess their own health conditions and feel the true feature of the socialist health system. For this reason, nurses should be more caring than anyone else and always keep affable, cheerful looks.
This is the creed Ri has cherished all through her career as she has worked as a nurse for four decades.
A few years ago, a nurse fresh from a nurses’ school, asked Ri how she could work as a nurse all through those decades, not just for some years.
Then she answered: “Nothing is comparable to the pride of seeing inpatients recover and leave hospital.”
Ri takes good care of patients as she would treat her own parents, siblings and children.
In spring over 20 years ago, a child was hospitalized in the paediatrics department of the hospital. The patient was in a critical situation. She had never seen such a serious case, though she had nursed many people until then.
Seeing the mother anxious about her son’s condition, Ri felt a pang of sympathy for her. She was also a mother of two children.
‘If he were my son, what could I do,’ she thought. Then she remembered her mother, who had been a doctor and often told her that the most important for health workers is sincere love for humans and boundless devotion to patients.
She buckled down to the nursing of the little boy with confidence and worked day and night. She devoted her all to him as his real mother would do.
Thanks to her selfless devotion, the child recovered from illness dozens of days after and left hospital.
Ri also donated her blood to serious cases on dozens of occasions.
We extend respects to Ri Un Suk and all other nurses across the country on the occasion of international nurses day.
